“Ransom” here is relational, not vicarious atonement. the believer was liable to punishment, Allah pardons him, and the disbeliever who was already deserving of Hell occupies that outcome instead. The “ransom” language describes the believer’s rescue from a possible fate, not a transfer of guilt from A to B.
