They argue: “Islam is barbaric because its God commands violence.” Then, when shown biblical laws and narratives in which God commands stoning, slaughter, and collective punish- ment, they retreat to “that was the Old Testament,” as if shifting the calendar absolves the commander. But Christianity does not say the Old Testament God was a different deity later replaced by Jesus. It says Jesus is that God. The same divine agent, the same authority, the same will. So if divinely commanded violence is proof of barbarism, their own criterion does not merely graze the Bible, it lands on Jesus himself: on their view, the one they sentimentalize as pure love is also the very one who, in Israel’s law, orders killings, sanctions brutal penalties, and threatens annihilation. If they recoil from that implication, the recoil is the point. It shows they are not operating with a stable moral principle but with a tribal filter: violence in the other tradition is treated as essence and indictment, violence in their own is treated as “context,” “covenant,” “for then,” meaning “please don’t draw the inference I just drew against you.” That is not critique. It is special pleading with moral language as camouflage.
